問題詳情:

NormanCrouchcr,70,adisabledmanwholostbothhislegswhenhew...

Norman Crouchcr, 70, a disabled man who lost both his legs when he was a teenager, has climbed more than 100 mountains, including the Alps and the Himalayas.

As a climber from a young age, doctors told Crouchcr he would have to give up his hobby when, at the age of 19, he had both his legs amputated (截肢) after falling onto railway tracks of an oncoming train.

But despite warnings from friends and family, he always refused to give up—and has spent 53 years since taking on dangerous mountain climbs.

The smallest mountain he has climbed is more than 8,200 feet tall—and he has even decided to reach a 26,000-foot summit(頂點) in the Himalayas.

Despite recently being diagnosed (診斷) with cancer, he has decided to carry on. He is now preparing himself for an adventure to the Alps again. “Life is like a muscle and if you don’t use it, it’ll waste away and climbing for me is like using the muscle of life,” said he.

Mr Croucher said that not having any legs wasn’t always a disadvantage and in some ways he felt it had helped him when climbing. He said, “Because there’s less of me and I have a shorter blood circuit (血液環路), so I take in oxygen better. So I may be slower on the lower mountain but then different at the top. And because there’s less body surface to lose heat from, I keep warmer as well so often I’m more comfortable than the others. And there are advantages on long distance flights, too. I can take my legs off and lay on two seats and have quite a good sleep.”

Croucher was awarded an OBE (大帝國勳章) for his work encouraging disabled people to try adventurous sports. He fought against those who held the view that only common competitive sports were suitable for disabled people.
