A Warm Welcome

A boy quarreled with his parents and ran away from home. He had a hard life without any contact with his family for years. Later he wanted to go home but he was afraid that his parents might not welcome him.

    Finally he decided to send a letter to his father expressing his desire to return home and begging his pardon. In his letter he asked his father to tie a white ribbon on the tree near his house by the side of the railway lines if he was ready to welcome him back home. If he did not see the ribbon on the tree, he would think that his family did not welcome him and then he would leave them forever.

   He boarded the train and became very nervous as the train was about to pass by his home. To his surprise, the tree was fully decorated with hundreds of white ribbons which danced in the wind. His family did not want him to miss the sight of the ribbon and the welcome signal, so they covered the whole tree with ribbons to show their whole-hearted happiness and willingness to welcome him back.

A boy quarreled with his parents and left home. After years of hard life, he wrote a letter to his father, asking if he would welcome him back. In fact, his parents had been whole-heartedly expecting his return!

    I am deeply moved by the story. And it reminds me of my father.

    At my junior school, my father never showed his love to me, so I thought he did not love me and sometimes I was upset about it. However, when I left home for senior school, he called me frequently and just asked me, “How’s your study and life? When will you come back?”  Gradually, I realized that he missed me although he would never say it out.

    Indeed, fathers’ love is like a mountain. It’s heavy because they devote all their love to us and it’s silent because they do not know how to express it. Faced with their love, we should accept it silently to show our appreciation.
