問題詳情:
Only half of all the UK graduates are working in a field that is related to their degree and major after they leave university, according to new research published recently.
In addition, 96 percent of the graduates say that they had changed their careers by the time when they reached the age of 24.
A survey of 2,000 graduates that was carried out by the New College of the Humanities (人文學科) --Professor AC Grayling’s new private university in central London — has found that 50 percent of the graduates purposefully chose a degree course to work in a specific area, but one in seven of them failed to find jobs in their chosen industry.
The survey shows an obvious preference among many graduates for working on their own business. One in three pointed it out that their changing jobs was out of financial reasons, while one in 10 said that they had done so in order to start their own business.
Swatee Jasoria, who is a director of professional development at the New College of the Humanities, said: “With the depression of current economic climate lasting and a number of new industries growing, the path(小路) of the traditional career has changed into a long and tough road.”
“Graduates need to become adaptable and build a personal portfolio(投資組合), which increasingly takes them into different roles and industries.”
A regional breakdown (分類) of the responses showed that just 13 percent of the graduates stayed in the same job for more than four years in London, compared to 24 percent in the North East and 30 percent in the South West.
The South East, Yorkshire and Scotland were the areas where the smallest percentage of the graduates worked in their chosen industry even at the veiy beginning, which is about 43 percent.
