IthadbeenayearsinceSusan,34,becameblind.Becauseofamedic...

It had been a year since Susan, 34, became blind. Because of a medical misdiagnosis (誤診), she was suddenly thrown into a world of darkness, anger and disappointment. Mark, her husband, drove her to work every day, even though they worked on opposite sides of the city. Soon, however, Mark realized the arrangement wasn’t working. Susan had to start taking the bus again. Just as he thought, Susan was frightened of the idea of taking the bus again. “How am I supposed to know where I am going? I feel like you’re abandoning (拋棄) me,”  she responded bitterly.

Mark taught her how to rely on her other senses, especially her hearing, to determine where she was and how to adapt to her new environment. Monday morning arrived, and they went their separate ways for the first time.

On Friday morning, Susan took the bus to work as usual. As she was paying, the driver said, “I do envy(嫉妒) you.” Curious, she asked the driver, “Why do you say that?”

The driver responded, “It must feel good to be taken care of and protected as you are.” “What do you mean?” she asked.

The driver answered, “You know, every morning for the past week, a fine-looking gentleman in a military uniform has been standing across the street watching you as you get off the bus. He makes sure you cross the street safely and he watches until you enter your office building. Then he blows you a kiss, gives you a little salute (敬禮) and walks away.”

Tears of happiness poured down Susan’s cheeks. Mark had given her a gift more powerful than sight — a gift of love that can bring light where there is darkness.
