TatyanaMcFaddenwasbornin*inRussia,withanillnessthatc...

Tatyana McFadden was born in * in Russia, with an illness that caused her not to be able to move half of her body. She was placed in an orphanage(孤兒院) that was unable to provide a wheelchair for her. Over the next six years, Tatyana taught herself to walk by using her hands and arms as feet and legs.

When Tatyana was six years old, an American woman named Deborah McFadden visited Tatyana’s orphanage. The orphanage workers tried to interest Deborah in adopting(收養) one of the able-bodied children, but she paid much attention to a special girl. “Tatyana was moving on the floor,” Deborah remembered. “Back at my hotel that night, I could not take my mind off her. Unbeknownst(揹着) to me, she told everyone that day, ‘That’s my mother,’ which she had never done before.”

Deborah followed her heart and adopted Tatyana, taking the lively girl back to her home in America. Deborah brought her to doctors and was told Tatyana would likely live a year or two at most. But Tatyana showed that all the doctors were wrong.

Deborah let Tatyana try swimming, gymnastics(體*)and wheelchair basketball although teachers doubted if she could do any of them. By the summer before ninth grade, Tatyana tried out for the Paralympic Games(殘奧會). At last, she surprised everyone by making the team at age 15.

As the team’s youngest competitor, she went to the 2004 games in Athens, Greece, and won a silver(銀的) medal and a bronze(銅的) one in two races. Then, at the Beijing games, Tatyana won three silver medals and a bronze one. Later at the London games, she won three gold medals and a bronze one.
