Imaginewalkingtoyourlocalparkonawarmsummerafternoonands...

Imagine walking to your local park on a warm summer afternoon and sitting down under a tree with a good book and a freshly picked apple. That is exactly what the clever minds behind Seattle’s Beacon Food Forest Project are hoping to do for all its residents(居民)in the near future.

The project is just 2.5 miles from the center of Seattle, close to the city’s popular Jefferson Park. It was started in February, 2012 and is being developed on seven acres(英畝)of land. Using $100,000 from the US government, hundreds of volunteers are working hard, developing the first two acres of the food forest. So far, the park that will be open to the public later this summer is home to 35 trees. They are expected to start producing fruits next year. The volunteers have also completed a large amount of decoration work to make the park more attractive.

Besides delicious fruits like strawberries and apples, residents will also be able to pick vegetables and even tree nuts. When the park is completely developed, it will be home to as many as 200 types of useful plants. And it will also include 50 individual gardens and a special area for free and paid workshops on a lot of different topics. There will also be special areas for picnics and for kids to play in, after they have had a freshly picked piece of fruit of course!

When it is completed, according to Glen Herlihy, a local resident, the park will be nice, although a little denser(更茂密的)than a normal park. Besides bringing the residents together, Glen also hopes that this activity will help bring people closer to the origin(起源)of food and encourage them to become more active in improving the environment.
